And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life.

Melchizedek was an interesting character in the story of Abram. He appears suddenly, then disappears just as quickly. He is not only the priest of Salem (which would be called Jeru-salem later) but he is also the king of Salem, which means peace. As the writer of Hebrews notes, Melchizedek was a forerunner of another priest/king who would come and redeem all of humanity, Jesus Christ. Jesus brought an indestructible life, and He offers that power to those who believe in His role between God and men, or his priesthood, and His rule over creation, or his Kingship.
