When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

– Mark 2:16-17 (NIV)

Today’s commentary

We often forget that Jesus was not as interested in polished displays of religion as much as those who were on the margins of religious practices. The Christian definition of excellence today would be described in the pageantry of a Sunday service, but what if God’s definition of excellence was in our ability to eat with people who would never enter a church? Be careful that we don’t look more like the religious leaders of this story than Jesus.
