When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.

This is the dark side of the Christmas story. Herod, a bloodthirsty king, realized that a rival had been born. From that point on he was determined to do everything that he could to protect his power. The birth of Jesus Christ disturbed the status quo and his life challenged political views, power structures, and economic systems. So don’t be surprised when your life is challenged as you follow Jesus. This has been his pattern all along.
