“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

When Jesus said, “I am”, He used the name that God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. In other words, Jesus was saying that He has always been with God. This concept of the Trinity is just as difficult for us today as it was for Jewish listeners back then. The Bible teaches that God is three persons, each person is fully God, yet there is only one God. This supernatural reality has no simple explanations, so our best response should be to rejoice in the mystery of a God who is beyond our comprehension.
