To answer before listening—
that is folly and shame.

– Proverbs 18:13 NIV

One of the great principles of negotiation is to seek first to understand, and then be understood. We are prone to give answers before we know the full situation, which only makes the person we are talking to feel invalidated in their perspectives. Parents need to listen to children, children to parents, spouse to spouse, worker to worker, and on it goes. So resist the shallow sound bites that you hear on media. Take the time to listen to each other. You may find it the most profitable thing you can do.
