Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face.

– Job 13:15 (NIV)

Today’s commentary

Job is thoroughly confused about what is happening to him: his children are dead, he has lost everything that he owns, and he is covered with boils. But Job’s statement captures an amazing yet complex tension. Instead of blaming or cursing God, Job continues to put his trust in Him, but he also makes his case to God on why this is not fair. This is a good balance for all of us. The greatest being in the universe to complain to is God, but even then we must keep in mind that there are reasons for our suffering that only God knows about. There are some things that we will not understand on this side of heaven, so our best response is to trust and worship the God who holds us in His hands.
