Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned- for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. – Romans 5:12-13 (NIV)
We all see death as something to stay away from. We know that aging is unavoidable, yet we fight the aging process as something that is tragically wrong. If we believe this passage that death came to the earth when Adam sinned, we can conclude that we were originally made to live forever. So our aversion to death makes sense, because death IS unnatural in the Biblical narrative. What is natural for us is eternal life and as Romans progresses, Jesus is described as the One who conquered death and sin. This is the attraction of the gospel – it proclaims to us our rescue and restoration to God’s natural order.
