The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

– Isaiah 9:2 (NIV)

The time of Isaiah was extremely difficult. Israel was falling apart under the assault of the Assyrian Empire. It was a very dark time as far as the people of God were concerned. Yet in the midst of their suffering Isaiah proclaimed a promise that the apostle Matthew later applied to the birth of Christ—Christ’s light has come to illuminate our soul. Jesus is not just a good teacher; he is the great light that we need in order to know how to go forward in the midst of the hardship of life.
