The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the house of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds. Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his own staff. – Numbers 17:8-9 (NIV)
When Moses wanted to determine who the spiritual leader of Israel would be, He went to God. How did they know God’s choice? The staff was the symbol of authority and the picture that the Scripture gives to us is that Aaron’s staff was fruitful. When God appoints authority, the people under them grow; they become vibrant and produce fruit for others. Management tools are important, but the primary sign of spiritual authority in a person is the life that only God can create among those around them.
