The men said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. – Joshua 2:17-18
This account of the conquest of the city of Jericho points to the gospel story. Like the woman Rahab, who hides the Jewish scouts speaking here, our lives must be marked in scarlet (blood) or we will be left to our own resources in the battle. Those who are willing to trust the mark of the blood and stay in its confines are the ones who will be saved from harm. This echoes the blood on the doorpost in the Exodus, and it prophesies the coming of One whose blood would deliver His people from death and sin.
