The Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting. He said, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord, bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock. “‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, you are to offer a male without defect. You must present it at the entrance to the tent of meeting so that it will be acceptable to the Lord.

This ordinance for a sacrifice would stand as a reminder that sin separates us from God. Offering a lamb without defect was a costly item for an Israelite, but God was searing into His people the seriousness of sin and the need to be reconciled back to Himself. This price for sin would be fulfilled when God provided His own lamb, Jesus Christ. The ultimate price for acceptance to the Lord, who is holy, would be paid once and for all by Jesus death upon the cross. The cross shows us that grace is not easy or cheap. We desperately need God’s act of mercy that is offered through Jesus Christ.
