The king then took an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, I will surely carry out this very day what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”

– 1 Kings 1:29-30 (NIV)

Today’s commentary

King David was on his deathbed when the news that one of his sons, Adonijah, was attempting to take the throne from Solomon, who was David’s choice for the heir. It seems that there is a struggle for every promise that God makes to His children. We would do well to not sit passively upon the promises of God for our lives. We need to fight for what God has said to us in His word. Every promise that God gives is not just a privilege; it is also a responsibility.
