Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. – Hebrews 5:8-10 (NIV)
Melchizedek is a mysterious figure in the Scripture. He appears out of nowhere to Abraham and we hear nothing of him again until the book of Hebrews. Yet the author of Hebrews equates Christ with Melchizedek. The suffering that Christ experienced on the earth became his power in heaven. As a result, this mysterious priest will not be accessed by the pride of knowledge, but the humility of obedience. This becomes the source of eternal salvation.
