know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified. – Galatians 2:16 (NIV)
The apostle Paul is referring to the Jewish law, and therefore uses a legal term that is good new to all of us: the word justified. Justification is when God legally declares our sin as forgiven through Christ and therefore, we are declared righteous in his sight. Salvation is more than an emotional or spiritual experience; God has made a legal declaration of righteousness for anyone who has faith in Jesus Christ, the One who took our sin upon Himself on the cross. As a result of being pardoned, now we are free to live a life that is pleasing to God!
