“‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, you are to offer a male without defect. You must present it at the entrance to the tent of meeting so that it will be acceptable to the Lord.

This is a major theme throughout the Bible: God is holy but His creation has rebelled against Him. The price of that rebellion requires a sacrifice that is without blemish. But how could there be a lamb without ANY defect? From the very beginning God was communicating to His creation that there is a vast gap between His holiness and our efforts. Nothing in this creation could meet God’s criteria; only something from the outside could bridge that gap. Jesus Christ is referred to as the Lamb of God because He had no flaw. God’s holiness and justice were met on the cross so that we can be acceptable to the Lord.
