I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

– Philippians 3:10-11 (NIV)

Notice how Paul creates an amazing tension in knowing Christ: the resurrection life with suffering. If Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses, then we can’t avoid suffering if we really want to know Him. But it doesn’t stop there. The suffering is the pathway to life. Somehow, in a mysterious fashion, knowing Christ in suffering leads us to power. It takes us to resurrection life. It seems that sympathy and victory go hand in hand.
