Mary showed great courage in this statement, for the angel Gabriel had just told her that she was about to become pregnant with the Son of God. As an unwed teenager, this would surely mean a life of disgrace. As a poor girl from Nazareth, Mary probably had no financial means to take care of her child. Her trust had to be completely in the fact that God chose her, and so He must take care of her. Mary’s story is one of trust in God, even in the midst of overwhelming circumstances.
