I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.

– John 6:48-50 (NIV)

Bread was a major source of food for that time period, so when Jesus said that He was the bread of life, he was stating that all of our true nutrition comes from Him. There is another aspect of this: manna, or the bread God provided to the Israelites, was a provision for survival in the wilderness. Jesus is saying that there is something greater than survival here; His provision takes us into the Promised Land. He takes us from simply making it to a place of abundance.
