He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushtan.)

– 2 Kings 18:4 (NIV)

Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org

The people of God had turned a moment of healing into an idol. Though the bronze snake was an important part of their story in the wilderness, years later the Israelites were worshipping the statue instead of God. Yet God is always moving His people toward Himself. The bronze snake was getting in the way of God’s purposes for that generation, so don’t be surprised when you see the remnants of the past be broken into pieces before your eyes. God is bringing us into his glorious now.
