Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the Lord. “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.

Isaiah is proclaiming that God is not impressed by the greatness of the temple in Jerusalem. On the contrary, God is the one who made all of the materials that they used to build the temple! In other words, we can be distracted by displays of grandeur, but God is looking for traits that are impossible to see with human eyes—the posture of the soul. As beautiful as Christmas can be, don’t confuse the external decor of Christmas for the internal beauty of a heart that is delicately attentive to God.
