For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

– Philippians 1:21 (NIV)

How could the apostle Paul say this? Did he hate life? On the contrary, Paul saw a life greater than this life. It was his high view of life that caused him to look at death and call it a “gain.” The fullness of life on this earth can best be captured by a view of another life—eternal life with Christ. This attitude can melt away fear and comfort our sorrows, for when we see earth in the light of heaven we can live the life that God meant for us to live, and we see death as a doorway into something greater than this life can offer.
