“Don’t call me Naomi,” she told them. “Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.”

– Ruth 1:20-21 (NIV)

The book of Ruth is not just about Ruth, but the restoration of Naomi. Naomi has lost her husband and two sons in Moab, so she wants to change her name from Naomi, which means “pleasantness”, to Mara, which means “bitterness.” Yet God is doing a work in Naomi. The bitterness of Naomi will turn to joy as God uses a Moabite woman to redeem her life. God is able to redeem and restore any situation.
