Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the LORD. Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? – Zechariah 1:4-5 (NIV)
This stark passage in Zechariah reminds us that God is speaking to each generation. The rebellion of a former generation does not mean that God has stopped speaking. Each new wave of people must wrestle with what the Holy Spirit is saying today. The prophets may die, our forefathers may have passed away, but the word of the Lord will stand forever. Whether you are young or old, ask what God is saying to this generation. Once you have arrived at an answer, throw yourself in the middle of it.
