Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.

– Deuteronomy 4:2 (NIV)

There is something in us that wants to be the “quality control” agent for God. We start off well, but in a desire for holiness, we have a tendency to add rules to what the Scripture says. Or in a desire for relevance, we try to cut out the parts of Scripture that seem foreign to our culture. But God’s word doesn’t need help; it has stood the test of time. To take the Scripture as it was intended helps us rise beyond the biases of our generation and exposes us to a perspective that is beyond time itself.
