Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. – Philippians 2:12-13 (NIV)

When Paul is writing to “work out your own salvation”, he is not talking about living in the fear of whether they are accepted by God in Christ or not. He is giving the Philippians the commission to make their salvation fruitful in the here and now. The fear and trembling is directly related to taking great care that they obey the Lord in ALL that they do. The good news is that we are not alone in this quest: God is working in you. It is His good pleasure to guide us in working out what we know to be true in our day-to-day (and sometimes minute by minute) activities.
