Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

– James 1:2 (NIV)

Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org

It would seem that the terms “joy” and “trials” shouldn’t be in the same sentence, but when we understand the nature of joy, we can see what James is saying. Joy is a deep satisfaction that comes from God to strengthen us. So joy becomes a major part of God’s provision when we face various trials, for we need a strength that is not from ourselves.
