But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

– 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org

Peter tells us that when God brought us out of darkness, it was to be part of a people. In a sense, our citizenship changes when we decide to follow Jesus. For the believer, we are a Christian first, then an American (or any other nation you are from). God gave us a new nationality at the cross, one that supersedes any other identity that we had beforehand. This brings together people from across the earth, who are called by God to declare a gospel that is big enough for everyone!
