But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

– Romans 7:6 (NIV)

Today’s commentary

This was radical for the Jewish person who read this in the first century. The Jewish law was no longer the binding way to identify us as the children of God—the Spirit was. It is unsettling to go from external adherences to internal obedience, yet God was never interested in those who just obeyed Him by going through the motions; He is looking for those who will follow Him with all of their hearts.
