But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy.

Today’s commentary

Ezra was leading the exiles from Babylon in rebuilding the temple. As some were shouting with joy with the rebuilt temple, others were weeping because the new temple could not match the old temple’s former glory. This seems to be a pattern with the work of God. The mixture of grieving over the loss of the old with a celebration of the new marks every new move of the Holy Spirit.
