Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.

– 1 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)

Today’s commentary

The birth, life and death of Jesus Christ is ultimately a mystery. When we try to grasp this we have to create new words like the Incarnation. It’s just hard to describe. Yet everything about Jesus life was hard to describe. God can’t be reduced to our terms otherwise He would be a being made in our image instead of the other way around. We want to be comforted by easy answers, but God invites us to enter in the mystery of who He is. May we learn to be more content with Jesus than with answers. May we allow the wonder of God guide us in the new year.
