Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.

– 1 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)

The birth, life and death of Jesus Christ is ultimately a mystery. Words like “incarnation” are attempts to try to grasp this mystery, yet everything about Jesus life was hard to describe. God can’t be reduced to our terms otherwise He would be made in our image instead of the other way around. We often want to be comforted by easy answers, but God invites us to enter into the mystery of who He is. This coming year may we learn to be more content with Jesus than with answers. May the wonder of God’s mystery guide us.
