“Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. – Luke 21:34-35

Jesus is warning his disciples about the day when He will come again. The picture that Jesus gives us is one of readiness. Life is hard and the temptation to escape those harsh realities is all around us (dissipation refers to excessive eating or drinking and the headaches and dullness that follows). But these kinds of behaviors are a trap. According to Jesus, readiness is not escaping the world’s pressures, but facing them. Learn to turn to God instead of other things, for we don’t know when the day of His return will be upon us and He expects us to be ready.
