“As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”

– 1 Kings 17:12 (NIV)

This dramatic dialogue is between a widow and the prophet Elijah. She has lost hope in the midst of a famine and drought, but as the story unfolds she listens to the prophet and experiences the provision of God in her life. Sometimes our ears don’t open to God until we feel that we are at the end of our rope, but God is ready to speak to us—to strengthen us in times of trouble. The Holy Spirit is there to guide us through our tough circumstances—if we are just willing to stop, listen, and obey.
