And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

– Luke 1:76-79 (NIV)

This was a prophecy that Zechariah the priest spoke over his newborn son, John, who would later become John the Baptist. This pattern is consistent throughout the Bible: before God does something great, He speaks to His people. God sends messengers to bring us back to Scripture, and in so doing bring us back to the purposes of God. May Christmas be a reminder that light has cut through the darkness, that God’s tender mercy is shining upon us, and that Jesus Christ was sent to guide our feet into the path of peace.
